Letter from President of the Florida-Georgia District, LCMS Re: Haiti

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This is a call to arms. Your help is needed immediately.

The nation of Haiti was hit with a horrific earthquake on January 12, 2010. There has been a tremendous amount of physical and emotional damage. Thousands of lives have been lost and many homes have been destroyed. Many thousands are homeless and have lost everything. Currently we are assessing the full extent of the damage from our Lutheran communities since lines of communication are beginning to open.

There is much that needs to  be done. We are not yet organizing teams to travel to Haiti , but we are trying to gather funds so that food and other needs can be supplied. In this difficult economic time please do whatever you can in your congregation to help us help these folks.

We are working with the LCMS World Relief and Human Care, Mission Haiti , as well as President Marky Kessa of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Haiti (ELCH), and President Revenel Benoit of the Lutheran Church of Haiti (LCH) to distribute supplies.

In addition to funds, congregations are encouraged to assemble boxes of the following items:
·        Food in pop top cans
·        Bottled water
·        Dishwashing liquid
·        Soap
·        Antibiotic ointment
·        Bedsheets
·        Shovels
·        Buckets
·        Wash cloths
·        Clean used clothes
All items must be boxed and clearly identified.  These boxes can be sent to

o       Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 7601 SW 39th Street , Davie , Florida , 33328 or

o       St. Paul Lutheran Church, 701 W. Palmetto Park Road , Boca Raton , FL 33486 .

Mission Haiti is putting together transportation to get materials to Haiti as quickly as possible. LCMS World Relief and Human Care has committed 200,000 food packs, but it will only scratch the surface. We see the ongoing assistance for Haiti will be necessary over the next 3-6 months or longer. But the immediate need is great, so we ask you to not only pray for this nation, but pray that God would lead you to see what you can do to help. Thanks for your partnership.
