Atlantic District ScholarshipsRaising Up New Church Leaders The Atlantic District is committed to developing and training new church leaders. Each year it receives applications from and awards scholarships to 25 to 30 students from the District who are pursuing full time church work. The District’s scholarship funds come from several sources, including donations from generous individuals and the regular support it receives from its member congregations. In 2009, the scholarship committee awarded over $10,000 in scholarships to those enrolled in undergraduate programs, and over $20,000 to young men attending one of our seminaries. To be eligible for a District scholarship, candidates must be working toward ordination (pastors) or commissioning (Teachers, Directors of Christian Education, Family Life Ministries, etc) in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. In the past these monies have been given to students enrolled at one of our Concordia colleges, universities, or seminaries. Going forward, the plan is to expand scholarship opportunities to those enrolled in non-traditional programs such as pastoral or teacher colloquy and SMP (Specific Ministry Program). The website, www.whataway.org provides detailed descriptions of these programs. Those who wish to know more about the Atlantic District Scholarship Program may contact Kristen Schulz, District Administrative Assistant, at Kristen.Schulz@ad-lcms.org or at 914-337-5700, x 2. Scholarship recipients are requested to keep us posted on the progress of their studies and their personal experiences. Invariably, the letters express appreciation for the assistance that has been provided. We thought you might like to read some of these letters and have posted several links below to pdf files of those letters. Atlantic District Awards $29,000 in Scholarships in 2010-2011 There were a total of 17 people in the scholarship “pool” for the 2010-2011 academic year. 10 are working towards being commissioned ministers, and 7 are working towards ordination in the pastoral ministry. This past August, a total of $29,000 was awarded; $17,000 represented Atlantic District presidential and educational scholarships, and $12,000 were scholarships from the Marohn family gift given in memory of Rev. Edwin Marohn to support men entering the ordained ministry.
Here are some excerpts from recent letters… Thank you for your gift! This year I hope to put my book training in Theology into real hands-on application at Lutheran Missionary Society where I will be serving. I am excited to be a servant, to live in a new city, to use my talents for Christ’s mission, to get a taste of professional church work and to grow in the Lord. Laus Deo, Personally, I pray for the Atlantic District and its congregations often. I pray that the Great Commission work of going and making disciples is fruitful in the Atlantic District. Specific ministries in the Atlantic District that I pray for are: my home congregation of Emmaus Evangelical Lutheran in Ridgewood, my sponsor congregation of St. John’s in Williston Park, and Martin Luther High School, which has a special place in my heart. If ever there are other specific things or ministries in the Atlantic District that I could pray for, please let me know. In Christ, I thank God for the opportunity as a seminarian, and the Atlantic District makes this possible. Maybe you think your charitable contribution to my education is only but one aspect of that and cannot be seen as making this opportunity “possible.” But the truth is, it does. And so much more than even that because I known your prayerful support that helps me get through the “tentatio,” as Luther put it, of pastoral formation, is aiding me a great deal. I greatly appreciate this generous gift. THANK YOU! May the LORD our GOD abundantly bless you in every way. May He use your lives to bring honor and glory to the Name of Jesus Christ bringing forth rich spiritual fruit. Please continue to lift me up in prayer that God would mold me into the servant He wants me to be.Peace in Christ, Much love in Christ, |
